DeepMind's AlphaFold aids in the search for antidepressants using artificial intelligence

AlphaFold is a tool developed by DeepMind that is beginning to show its potential in the field of biology and pharmacology, predicting protein structures with remarkable accuracy, to the point of helping in the identification of new psychedelic compounds for the treatment of depression.

The ability of this AI system to predict protein structures has been crucial in drug development. At first many researchers did not trust the tool, however, recent studies have begun to dispel these doubts, as the predictions obtained can be as useful as experimental methods.

Both the structures provided by AlphaFold and those obtained by traditional methods identify different drugs, which offers an interesting range of possibilities for innovative treatments.

AlphaFold excels in efficiency when identifying G protein-coupled drugs (GPCRs). These proteins are involved in a variety of biological processes. It should be noted that the tool does not completely replace experimental methods, even in some cases more detailed models are needed to refine the properties of a drug.

Isomorphic Labs Limited, based in London and Lausanne, Switzerland, formed a strategic alliance to exploit the full potential of AlphaFold, and updates are expected to predict protein structures in interaction with drugs. Isomorphic Labs is a company created in 2021 and is dedicated to drug discovery and uses artificial intelligence systems to predict protein structures in the human body with high accuracy.

Biomedical and pharmaceutical research is evolving by leaps and bounds, these partnerships are expected to successfully solve complex health problems.
